So, what's the deal? The stats aren't great, so why the rarity? Is it a joke? A mistake?

I would never discuss them without you, however I have brought them up once outside here. When I made an official feature request to make the Work Boots less rare with some suggestions about how to do that.Fun fact, almost monthly I search up "work boots" on the forums to see if anyone discussed them without me

It's just part of all boots being rare, they aren't inherently insanely rare but every time you catch a 'boot' you get one of the fairly large selection that's there, obviously only one of which is the work boots
I've actually fished up 4 boots that I can remember in my time playing, never work boots though (2 pairs of dark boots, one thermal, one tundra, and one pair of thermal boots)

It's just like you said- it's the most rare piece clothing with some of the worst stats. It's not meant to be this legendary item, I think CA overlooked it, but it's fun to make out to be this rarity. :)

They're actually CAs boots from when he used to work for Joja. In a fit of rage he threw them into the ocean when he quit, and soon afterwards he began work on SDV. They still hold a faint smell of feet, and thus they are a super rare find for collectors and fans of his work

I guess I've been away from the game for too long; I saw mention of work boots, and wondered why there would be discussions about work boots on a gaming forum -- and why someone would be specifically searching for them here. Took a while to realize it was about the in-game item, not real life...
I haven't been around, or playing, because back in August I moved overseas to a different country, and most of my stuff, including my PC, is still on its way here.
PS. I have work boots and wear them in winter and in other conditions that aren't suitable for light shoes.

Thanks! So far it's been smooth: zero issues with any of the flights, zero issues at the border, and no problems anywhere else either. The only real question mark remains whether all my stuff arrives undamaged, but I picked a moving company with well over 100 years of experience, tons of good reviews, and lots of recommendations in various moving-related discussions, so I'm confident it'll be fine.
Adjusting has been easy so far, as prior to moving here I'd visited four times for a total of about 10 months.
I moved to the US, so immigration was a long process -- but 1000% worth it, because I came here to live with my husband.
