Prismatic Shards
1) Get Galaxy Sword
2) Enchanting your weapon(s) to get special property (there is a range of different ones)
3) Enchant your tools (various properties that alter their function, in different ways)
4) Loved gifts to everyone, except for Haley
5) Required from Mr.Qi for his special quest(s), at the endgame

In the Forge. It's in room/level 10 of the Volcano Dungeon and also requires Cinder Shards. You can enchant your Weapons or Tools and the enchant is random, though apparently you shouldn't get the same enchant twice in a row and you're supposed to get 3 different ones if you enchant 3 times. This helps a bit to eventually get the Enchantment you want.

Alternatively if you are on PC/Mac in v1.6 you can craft the Mini-Forge after you achieve Combat Mastery which of course is more convenient.

There are also other uses for Prismatic Shards as the Desert Trader trades 3 Prizzies for Magic Rock candy every Thursday, one per Thursday though so plan your week accordingly.

But this is all preamble for the ultimate uses for extra Prizzy Shards:

Tailor all the prismatic clothing, there are 5 different ones and it's random what you'll get
The best Dye in Emily's Dye Pots. No more scrounging for a purple or blue dye in addition to all the others, all you need is a single Prismatic Shard. So convenient!

If you want to complete the museum collection, you'll have to donate a prismatic shard. Also, if you've completed the community center, there is a hidden bundle which also can take a rainbow thingy.

There are a LOT of uses for prismatic shards, some of the general ones are:
-Selling
-Gifting (universally loved except for haley)
-Using as a showpiece
-Donating to the museum
-For dyeing (counts as any colour)

More specific uses are:
-Trading for magic rock candy from the desert trader on thursdays
-Enchanting tools and weapons
-Used to tailor something like 4 outfits at a sewing machine
-Used to sacrifice children, turning them into doves
-Put in a junimo hut to make your junimos rainbow
-For the galaxy sword as you've done already
-Wedding ring if in multiplayer
-The missing bundle unlocking the theater post cc
-For a qi quest

Those are just off the top of my head, it's a super versatile item and probably has more uses
