Unless I misread the room, @sameperson_differentfont was avoiding spoilers.
There is something else to crack open for almost all artifact needs
at Calico Desert. You can buy artifact troves from a trader, and I believe the festival there, but I'm still on 1.5

Most items for Gunther are dug up or fished out. Some are dropped as loot. I wouldn't say it's difficult, just takes some time. And, oh yeah, you'll get duplicates. I could dedicate a chest to chicken statues.

Answering your initial question, yes I did find all Artifacts and I followed no intentional strategy to do so, just played the game. Finished finding them by about the beginning of Year 4.

Geodes only give you less than 10% of all the Artifacts (3 total) that you need. Ignore them for Artifacts. Instead Hoe up every Artifact Spot you come across and do all the regular things in game as some of them also get you a few Artifacts, like Fishing Treasure Boxes and Monster loot drops. As I chose the Pirate profession in this playthrough, I got loads of Fishing Treasure and that really helped, plus it's fun! OK except for my Inventory constantly being full.

But full of fun stuff!

Some artifacts have a higher chance of spawning from artifact spots (those little 'sticks' that tell you where to dig) in specific areas (woods/desert/mountains/beach).
Others have a higher spawn chance in fishing chests, while others have a higher spawn rate in specific types of geodes (omni/frost/magma).
As Bawby mentioned, trading omni geodes for artifact troves from the desert trader will at least guarantee you get an artifact instead of a mineral.
No matter what, you will come accross a lot of duplicates before finishing the museum.

Thats the only annoying part about collecting artifacts is that you not sure what you getting in geodes

Or in the sand

Thats my view.no offence
If you're on pc or mobile and don't care about reading your file, there are tools online that can show you what you get from every geode in what order, so you can more optimally open them.

It's up to you if you want to use it, some regard it as less legit than spamming geodes yourself, I personally don't mind and use external tools a fair bit

The new treasure totems, are particularly effective, in collecting artifacts. I had like 5 artifacts that troubled me a lot, in 1.5 yet here, i managed to collect them, in a matter of 2 in-game days! Just visit the wiki to see in which area what artifacts appear and go there to cast totem(s)! The desert merchant sells artifact troves too; while Ginger island exploration (hoe? pan?), yields artifact troves also. Last but not least, fishing can earn you some.

I attended one of the new events that required fishing and ended up with a treasure chest with an artifact in it. I tend to just enjoy my adventures and not "worry" about when things happen. All the folks above gave good advice. Just keep going and you'll fill that museum up in no time!

The chances of finding finding Fishing Chests is increased by using:

Magnet Bait
Treasure Hunter Lure
Pirate profession (Level 10 Fishing, choose Fisher at Level 5)
Luck

I generally use Daily Luck and food and drink Luck Buffs and I chose Pirate at Level 10. I don't use the Bait or Lure as they reduce the bite rate of Fish, I'd rather get more Fish biting to increase the overall rates back up. But I suppose if you were just there for the filthy Treaaaaayyyyyyyzzzzzsure you scurvy dog, then use both of those to reduce filling your inventory with wiggly stinky Fish.

Good luck, matey!

Just some protips tho:
  • Instead of giving the Dinosaur Egg, hatch it in your coop so you can have multiples of it
  • Also, don't donate the prismatic shard right away, use it in the Desert to get a better weapon, in the middle of the three bones sticking out of the ground
  • You can get one Ancient Doll by digging the spot on the right next to the waterfall close to Joja Market. The other Ancient Doll you can get in the Calico Desert, in the South West of the bench in the South East area. If you get a duplicate, throw it into the lava in level 100 of the mines to start one of the 1.6 new quests/secrets
  • If you find a duplicate Dwarf Gadget, keep it to craft the Farm Computer once you get the recipe
  • If you kill 500 Dust Sprites (floors 41 to 79 in the Mines) you get the Burglar's Ring that gives you twice as much loot (sounds a lot of monsters, but they do come in great numbers every time they show up ) just talk to Gil once you get that.
Other than that, the Artifact Trove (Desert seller for 5 Omni Geodes and supply crates in the Beach farm) is also a good way to get a few. But other than that, keep digging the artifact spots, fighting monsters and fishing and you'll eventually get them all. I usually get them all around year 3 to 5.

The Treasure Chest has its own catch bar like the Fish does when you're catching it, and you need to "catch" the Treasure Chest first.

Here's what I do: when the Treasure Chest pops up, continue catching the Fish as normal but when the Fish gets to about 3/4 caught, switch to the Chest and "catch" that with your green Fishing Bar. After catching the Chest it disappears and go back to finish catching the Fish, its green bar shouldn't be much below half. It's hard to do with difficult Fish and usually I just ignore the Chest for those but it's fun to try!

I use the same strategy.

It's annoying to get a chest with a really difficult fish, because there isn't much of a chance of any kind to get the treasure.

Oh! There is a new item in 1.6 that might help you out.
The Treasure Totem, a recipe you get with Foraging Mastery.
It is a bit costly to make, it requires 5 hardwood, one mystic syrup (from the Mystic Tree that comes from the Mystic Tree seed that also comes from Foraging Mastery) and 10 Moss.
If you use it outside in an obstructed area it will spawn 16 artifact spots in a circular area around you. It can be useful if you are endgame and haven't completed the museum yet.

I just came to this thread because I remembered those exist today! They really work nicely. I used one to find the last artifact needed on my main farm. I think I'll give it a try on another that I'm just missing one item for, too. ^_^
