I keep getting this message from my statue once or twice a week saying something about a prismatic butterfly. What is this, where do I even look for it? Thanks.

It can basically appear almost anywhere on the mainland map (not the desert or railroad though).
When you find it it’ll give you a small amount of cash (like 2% of your total earnings up to 50k), and rarely a prismatic shard iirc
You just have to wander the map looking for it

I have received the prismatic butterfly message a few times, the first time I looked over most of the map but didn't find it. Found it the second time pretty quickly and got the g but don't really need g for anything. So I haven't looked for it any subsequent times, just been following my daily things of next to nothing still taking until 1:30am somehow.
And I haven't seen it since despite the message happening many times. As it's random on the maps where it'll spawn, finding it seems to be a pretty rare occurrence unless you're prepared to get 2 Speed Buffs and run the entire map. That's not my style so the nice thing about Prismatic Butterfly days is I can ignore my statue Buff. Same goes for
days, I got the statue after reaching 10 with all Villagers so that's a day off, too!
Next playthrough I may leave the relationship aspect 'til later to take advantage of the buff. Hmmm but then I got some expensive Statue tellin' me what days I gotta go be all nice and social to everyone because that's today's sentence. On second thought, nah I like taking the day off better.

Thanks FG! I just didn’t understand what it was about. They are rolling out the wiki info but very slowly cause I’m sure it’s very time consuming. I just saw it there today. Thanks!

I don't know if you consider using MouseyPounds' predictor as cheating or not. If you want to, you can use it to check the location (forest/town/mountain etc).
From the few times I used it, I can confirm that the predictor is accurate for locating the butterfly.
Some caveats:
1. Even if you know it's in the forest/town/etc you still need to explore the area. It can be forest near the wizard tower, or it can be near Marnie's ranch
2. If you reset the day, the butterfly will still be in the general area of where you found it. If it's near Marnie, it will still be near Marnie when you reset the day.
3. I don't know what's the latest time you can find the butterfly, but I've never found the prismatic butterfly in the evening / at night. I assume by that time, the butterflies already flew off the map and you won't be able to find it anymore for the day.

That would explain it! One time, I hadn't found it by evening, so I went to every area of the map and took a screenshot so I wouldn't accidentally miss it in some far corner. And yet, no butterfly anywhere! It was probably too late in the day.

I'm pretty sure they can't be found past a certain time which would corroborate your experience, maybe 8pm?

I think it's after 5pm - the Stardew Wiki says: "The Prismatic Butterfly cannot spawn after 5 pm. This means that if it has reached 5 pm, the player has not found the butterfly yet, and they are not on the map where the butterfly is, they will be unable to find it."

For me, the butterfly spawns above the bus. Two times i got that buff and it appeared exactly there. No prismatic shard, though...
