How do you name things?

I love this thread. OK. This is embarrassing. But Mr. Spreadsheet Guy named his first animal "C01". I think I kept that nonsense up for a few animals. Then I started using the random generator, and I the random names are pretty adorable. But you guys are so cool I want to name things like y'all.

(then my barn animals are named after the 7 deadly sins and the horsemen of the apocalypse)
Seriously? This rules!

I always name my animals after villagers
Runner up! Maybe I will do this.

My horse is Melody, and my farm is Harmony (every run; I only change farmer names). So guess what my Stardrop word is. Singing.

It depends for me on the farm name and if I have a theme for it or not. For example on Olo farm (started on May 4th) my farmer Hans had a horse named Falcon, and the dog was Chewie. Other animals of note, Luke, Leia, Lando. etc.

Usually though, I stick with some basic boring names that amuse or satisfy me in some way.
The horse is quite often "Traveler". (War horse for Gen. Lee in Civil War.)
The dog is quite often Spot, spelled "Cerberus" - (a reference to a great fictional detective series.)
The goats are usually "William" and "Johnathan". (Billy Yank and Johnny Reb,, get it - johnny goat? )
The brown cow is usually "How now". (How now brown cow is an old saying from my grandmother.)
The white cow can be "Who now" ""Where now" "Why now", it depends on what I'm feeling.
the brown chicken is usually "Brown cow" (brown chicken brown cow is a slang reference to something not from my grandmother)
The sheep can be "Bully" (wooly bully is an old song lyric that makes me chuckle.)
Pigs are "Snuffles" "Oinker" "Chops" "Loin" "Scratchier" or rarely "Wilbur".
Ducks amuse me once I found out that Paddles and Puddles are very duck related, so the flock is Paddles, Peddles, Piddles, Poddles, Puddles, and sometimes Pyddles.
Dinosaurs end up in the same vein. Spakes, Spekes, Spikes, Spokes, Spukes, and sometimes Spykes.

anyway. long post needs cut short

I really want to have some sort of pattern to the way I name things in my game, but every time the prompt appears when I buy new animals or even when I start a new farm, my mind just goes blank.
How do you guys name your farmers, farms, pets, animals and children?
my void chickens are Cluckthulu, Grue, and Lucifer. Other than that, I just kinda wait for a name to come to me.

I always name my cats after cats I've owned in my life (that means I've plenty of names to choose from: Morris, Sunflower, Smudge, Arthur, Sparkle, Buttercup, Cedric, Beastie, Fluff, Shadow, and more). For my chickens and ducks, I also used a naming scheme that I've used for actual chickens--I name them after gemstones, so end up with chickens and ducks named Pearl, Opal, Topaz, Jade, etc. Cows and larger livestock have been a little trickier, and sometimes I just default to the name generator for them, but sometimes ask my kids for names. That's always my strategy with dinosaurs, which is why at least one of my games as a dino named Grimlock.

I named my 4 chickens for the sisters in Little Women, my void chicken Ursula ( she had to have a villain name) and that started a trend for naming my animals on fictional characters I loved. Although, I named my pig Peppa for my 5 year old!

That's a really neat naming system you've got! Naming your cats after ones you've owned in the past is a sweet way to honor their memory and keep their spirits alive. It must be nice to have a roster of names to choose from, each with its own story and personality. Using gemstone names for your chickens and ducks is clever and gives them a bit of a regal flair. Pearl, Opal, Topaz, Jade... they all sound so elegant!

And naming things can be a fun and creative process! When it comes to naming my chickens or other animals, I usually go with names that reflect their personality or appearance. For example, if I have a chicken with fluffy feathers, I might name her Fluffy or if one is particularly feisty, I might name her Rebel. I also like to draw inspiration from things I love, like movies, books, or music. Sometimes a name will just pop into my head and feel right for the animal. If you're looking for some inspiration for naming your chickens, you might want to check out https://expertchicken.com/know-your-chickens-the-10-most-popular-chicken-names-and-their-meanings. They might have some cool ideas or stories about how other people have named their chickens.

Same here. 😄

I solved the problem by choosing a favourite book, film or series for the new save in advance and go from that. So I already had a staff named on the basis of Tolkien's Silmarillion, Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, a couple of mysteries I like etc.

I love hilarious names, too. In one save my animals got numbered "One", "Two", "Two A" etc., my cat's name was Carpet, my horse's name Patataj (the Polish onomatopoeia for the drum of hooves).

Or I give flower names. In my current save I use botanical tree names, e. g. my two rabbits are called Fraxinus and Excelsior (fraxinus excelsior = ash tree), my cat Abies (fir tree), my horse Picea (spruce) and so on.

Horse: Mr. Boneybutt, after my first Minecraft skellyhoss
Void Chicken: Eugene Levy, because eyebrows
Dinos: all kaiju, Ebirah is the most recent addition but always start with Mosura so I can sing her song as I name her
Bunny: usually Fluffyrump or something similar, considering using famous designers in the future as Ms. Bunbuns is my source for Tailoring
Cow, Goat, Duck: randomize until the name reminds me of something else and choose that
2 Ostriches: something that comes as a pair. Like Edina and Patsy, or Jake and Elwood

i also get that, right as i start naming stuff, my mind just goes blank (^_^')

i got stardew valley when i was on vacation in london, and i heard of a place called the marble arch. while naming my farm, that was the first thing that came to my mind somehow so i named it marble farm.

as for my cat (or whatever pet you have), i just let it come naturally. it takes a long time to manifest some inspiration, but it happens! i named my cat marzipan, because yeah, the stereotypical thing of naming pets after desserts.

i don't have other animals yet, so i can't speak on that, but i named my kid lou because it sounds cute

On the farm where I had a mill, Cupcake Farm, all my animals had dessert names. Pudding, Custard, Cookie, Sweetie, Candy, Cocoa.
When I married Emily one time, I named my animals after gems that aren't in the game, like Sapphire and Garnet. I couldn't think of many, so I also had Jewel and Pendant.
One of my farmers was named Celeste and I used space names. Jupiter, Luna, Comet, Nova, Hubble.
I went the Joja route once, and I only grew flowers. I tried to think of different flowers that aren't in the game, like daisy and lilly.

I usually have an idea in mind. Depending what I want to do in my playthrough, I usually name my farm, farmer, and animals along a loose theme. If the auto-generator gives a cute or funny one, I might keep it, or shorten or alter it. That's how you end up with Berko, Hubbins, Fandy. I also often just choose any name that sounds cute or nice at the time.

My farmer is usually Buster Gonad (from a comic book) My farm is usually Toxic Waste Farm, My horse is usually Bloody Slow, my dog is usually Bugger Off ( A real dogs name that I had as a child) or Leg Humper. With all the coop and barn animals I always use the random name generator

I always name each of the animal types the same name but with a different constant at the start. So my chickens are Puffy, Muffy, Huffy, and Tuffy. My cows are Purti, Murti, Hurti, and Turti. So on and so on. However, my pigs are just all of my friends(with their permission, of course).

Technically they all are female right, because of eggs and pregnancy, except for the rabbits and the horse.
So I just name them after characters from movies or TV shows I like or used to like. Singers, actress, family and friends even. Hahaha I end end with endless names really
