A question of gender

This question came up in my mind when I first started playing but I sort of forgot about it until I started a new game yesterday to try out the Meadowlands farm.

It looks to me like, except for the female being a couple pixels shorter, there is no difference between the genders. While some choices are more 'typical' for one gender, all of the clothing and hairstyles are totally available for either in the selection screen. You can have a bald-headed woman or a guy with Princess Leah (no relation) twin buns.

Is this true or am I missing some subtlety?

i think when you go in the spa/swimming pool thing though if you choose female you automatically get boobs and wear a bikini and male just shorts..... no updates regarding pronouns or being able to select non-binary or anything then in the new update?

Yeah, you're right about that. I don't recall there being any changes on that in the vanilla update (unfortunately), but there's always the Gender Neutrality mod on Nexus that you can check out.

Alot of games are now including this as standard (given its now 2024) or giving people the option to choose body type and pronouns rather than simply male/female (even stuff like Animal crossing and story of seasons)..Maybe it will be changed before it reaches console? Not everyone playing SDV are playing on a PC with access to Mods.

I definitely agree with you! I remember playing stardew when it launched, and being so happy with the fact that I could be in a gay relationship- that was pretty rare at the time, so I'm surprised that a non-binary or gender-neutral option hasn't been introduced yet.

There are a few other gender differences as some Tailored Shirts are gender-specific and worse, the one you see in your Dresser or Inventory is the male version when your character is female. So it's not a good preview of what you're trying on. I wanted a specific Shirt and could never find it until looking in the Wiki and realizing it was there all the time.

The male version. Sigh.

I popped it on and predictably looked awesome. It's not right to hide awesomeness.

And sometimes I like male version of the Shirt better and can't wear it! @$%@!#^@!%$#

Anyway. There's 1 more subtle difference: I can rarely see my Shoes as female while wearing a Dress and the 1 pixel taller male sprite may show them better, but I haven't tested this yet! If this is the case I'll probs play as male next time, enjoy those male-shirt-versions and get annoyed at the gender-specific dialog a bit because

It's worth it for the Fashion.

There are some minor differences, the female has different foot shape with no boots, shorter body and different body shape as well as slight variations with different settings on than the male body. Other than that they are largely identical outside of some gameplay features.

I love the fact that females in the valley are healthy but not stick thin.
