Why the attraction to Shane?

He has a very good story arc leading up to 8 hearts which people seem to admire as he takes on and accepts a lot of responsibilities that he wasn’t and ditches bad habits as well as accounting for what he’s done. Personally I don’t think he’s the best spouse as he seems to regress a tad bit but he’s definitely a really well developed npc.

Shane seems to be a popular pick. Is it the "I can fix him" mentality? Or people relate to him? Just curious what people like about him. =)
I think you're pretty much on it. What I've heard (and remember!):

Relate
Fix
Character arc
Chikkinz!
Older than 20
"Real" problems

At one point I read that someone romanced Shane out of spite because he's such a _______ at first. Now that I can relate to. When I first met him and got a few interactions to see where this was headed I was like, "Oh I'm on to you boy you ain't foolin' me one bit. I see right through you! And you will NOT escape me as I'm a damn Shane octopus. You've been captured!"

I relate to him quite a bit due to his depressive nature and tendency to push others away; he also reminds me a LOT of my real life husband. I love his story arc in the game and absolutely melted the first time I saw his
blue chickens
cut scene. I think it's so sweet that your farmer inspires him to turn his life around and to see that there's still good in the world, despite the myriad of terrible things. Having said all that, I have never married Shane in the game, but if Elliot didn't exist I would, because as stated above, the selection of "older bachelors" is slim and Harvey is too dull for my taste.

Tbh I generally just like trying to marry a different bachelor or bachelorette (I'm pan:) ) in each of my play throughs... oh and also blue chickens :wchicken::shane:

For me, marrying Shane was definitely a result of that “I can fix him” mentality you mentioned. Of course, he’s just a character in a video game so… I did not in fact fix him.

I haven't married him currently, but I definitely will in my next playthrough after I stumbled across his anti-joja song.

While co-op with friends, I gave him a jade, and he accepted it HAPPILY. Then there's a farmer started to gave him 2 jade every week. Took me long enough to notice his favorite wasn't jade but chili.:hmm:

Once Shane trusts you, he's friendly towards you and he really appreciates that you're his friend, even if he doesn't say it all the time.

When you're married to him, he's also very funny! And he's sweet in his own silly Shane-style way.:stardrop:

Shane's story arc and character development are pretty interesting for all the reasons stated above. As a husband, he is funny but is not the most lovely of all, though this is not surprising given his personality. The only thing that I dislike about him, is his spouse room: it is so dirty, even dirtier than the one he had when living with Marnie, while he was supposed to be in a worse state of mind at that time.

For me it mostly comes down to his growth, and that you can SEE that growth reflected in the game. It makes him unique in that regard, as the other characters may change slightly, but are otherwise go about their day/interactions the same. And similarly to nicodeux, the only thing I can't stand about Shane is the muddy foorprints in his room. Completely ruins my house aesthetic. His 14 heart event should have had something to do with cleaning that pig sty up! 😭

Strictly from gameplay perspective, Shane is an excellent choice, especially if you want to get married fast. His birthday is Spring 20, he likes salmonberries, he loves pizza and beer. He also loves Hot Peppers, which are an inexpensive, frequent and everbearing summer plant. He is also easy to find, with a consistent and predictable schedule, so you can talk everyday.

He also leaves the house super early to work, which is really helpful. There's a reason he's the fastest speedrun marriage candidate (afaik right now, I haven't kept up much with that side of the speedrun community, though he's been consistently the fastest for a long while)

I see it, somewhat. He seems to be a nice man when you get to know him- Though I couldn’t marry him. His spouse room is far too dirty for my taste. From what I’ve heard, there’s definitely a bit of an “I-can-fix-him” mentality around him as well. He’s definitely not my first choice, but I understand the people who DO choose him. 😄
