Wizard friendship decay?

I was at 4hearts with the Wizard so I could go in his basement to change my appearance.... today I tried going in there and he said he didn't trust me (which is what he'll say before 4 hearts). And I was like "tf? no way" and saw it had dropped to 3 hearts...?

Why did this happen? I haven't talked to the man in ages, cuz, well, I have a life to live, and he's not the most interesting to talk to. I haven't given him any bad gifts either so like why did it drop

You lose 2 friendship points each day with villagers you don't talk to, if they're below max hearts. More if you're dating or married to them.
For comparison, 1 heart is 250 points.

It's little enough that it doesn't really matter for the villagers you run into on a regular basis (since talking gives you 20, is easy to offset the 2 pts per day).

But with the wizard always in his tower, you actually have to go out of your way to talk to him.

I try to always make a detour when I'm near the tower.

I put a chest outside his place and fill it with Quartz and the Solar essence I don't use. Then I just stuff his mouth full of gifts till he likes me enough for it not to decay.
