Windows Windows updates break game

Hi,

I play on PC, have Windows 10. I do not play through a launcher (Steam or GOG Galaxy). I bought the game from GOG and have it own my computer. The game always works like a dream as long as I avoid updating Windows, but every time I agree to updates it breaks in the same way. Usually the problem "fixes itself" quite soon, but it is now day 4 of not being able to play.

After any windows update it takes my computer a very exact 3 minutes and 30 seconds for the game to open (compared to less than a minute normally). I can go to 'Load', but it will never actually find any saves, even though the save files are where they should be. If I as much as move my mouse, the game crashes.

The game is stored on C-drive, which is the only drive I have (which sucks, as most advice I've gotten is moving it away from the C-drive). I have tried deleting and redownloading the game to different locations, running it as an administrator and well, waiting, because I'm not good with computers and don't understand what's going on at all and don't want to make things worse. I was advised to try to get the 32-bit version, but I couldn't figure out how to if not using a launcher (or if it was even a solution to my problem, because there is nothing wrong with the game as long as I do not use a launcher or agree to Windows updates).

It took me 3 decades to find a de-stress tool this good so I'm really desperate and hope there is a both an explanation and a fix for this. I have grown to fear all updates and I know it's not healthy.

(Since on reddit people were mostly intrested in why I wouldn't just play through a launcher, I'll just in case add my reasons here:
- GOG Galaxy doesn't work on my computer. Even opening the game can take up to an hour, and the game itself is unplayable with so much lag. This to me makes almost as little sense as the actual issue I'm posting about, but I've accepted it (especially as I see no reason to use a launcher). I have never tried Steam tbh, but I'm poor so buying another copy of the game on a platform I'm not a big fan of is my last resort.
- I want to play offline at all times. Internet connection in my apartment is not the best, and half of the year I spend somewhere where it can be even worse. Also, I know this might be wrong or selfish, but I do not want updates when they are released. I do not like new things, I like to wait until I'm mentally ready for them.)

Thank you in advance.
