There are some books that are dedicated to giving combat or foraging xp. When you use them, the game tells you you have learnt something about the skill.
There are some other books that give a unique power, but when you find them again, they give xp in a skill. When you use them, the game does not tell you, you gained xp in that skill.
It is inconsistent and confusing. Did it really work if I do not get the message telling it did something since the regular xp books do tell you ?
Maybe it simply does not give any xp, since it is impossible to know your xp progress in a skill - It is only displayed when grinding for mastery.
It is also impossible to know if you are using a book that gives 10xp or 1000xp nor to know how much xp you need for the next level. Maybe you could slay 5 slimes to get as much xp as the 1000g book, nobody knows.
