what is the name of the currency?

Confused

I've always assumed it means gold, which in hindsight, is funny because that feels like such an 'old-timey' currency type for the relatively modern world of Stardew.

In conclusion, I will now refer to the in-game Stardew money as giggle goof coins. For no other reason than for the fact that name makes me laugh.

I think of it as Gold Pieces, to separate it from Gold Ore and Gold Bars. Since a Gold Bar sells for 250g, then by weight a Gold Piece is only 1/250 of a Bar and as it takes 5 Gold Ore to make a Bar, each of those Gold Ore contain 50g worth of Gold in them. The in-game 'g' must be very small.

Considering I stroll around with a few million of 'em from time to time.

I believe if you buy Pam's house and take credit for it, Shane jokingly asks if he can borrow 100,000 gold? Although it's been a few years since I've seen that dialogue, he might actually just say G, but honestly even if that's the case it'd be a pretty unambiguous "this is what people call the currency when talking about it" if anyone's poised to trigger that dialogue in one of their saves.

In the Spanish translation of the game G is translated to O. Oro is spanish for gold, which suggests that it is indeed gold.

It is also gold on the wiki:

OK okok it's time to come clean. It's been pretty clear from the start that CA chose a world currency standard as the model for Stardew Valley but he just didn't want to single out the lucky nation. However! Through many numerous sweaty seconds of internet sleuthing I... have found it. He stole the currency from Paraguay and it's the

Guarani

So from now on when those people complain that Tea Saplings now only sell for 250, they should notate it as 250 PYG or simply:

₲250

I used to call it G-bucks once upon a time. Then some middle schoolers I was working with as a counselor made fun of that and compared it to fortnite currency which is apparently "v-bucks". These days I also think of it as gold, or at least gold-proofed currency called "G" for short. I like "gollars", tho. That's funny 😝

As others have pointed out, in game they're fully labeled as 'gold' (which would probably be a shortened abbreviation for something like 'gold chips', 'gold coins', etc.)

I've personally always just referred to them as 'G' (just the letter) to avoid confusion with any of the actual gold bars/ore/items, though I've heard terms like 'gollars' used fairly frequently
