1.6 Update Unusual level in the Mines

This has happened a few times now: after reaching the bottom of the mines and going to find ore or monsters, a floor will sometimes look a lot different than normal. Such a floor always seems to have a lot of minecarts (all of them empty).
Is it random? I looked at the wiki, but didn't find anything. I didn't read everything to avoid potential spoilers, though.

I have not unlocked the quarry or the desert yet, so have not entered those mines and they cannot be the reason.

Here's floor 81 looking unusual and like a minecart parking lot:

(I killed, mined, and tilled everything, hence the lack of rocks and enemies.)

One of the post 1.6 updates added new mines layouts that sometimes replace the standard ones once you reach the bottom of the mines.

There are some new skull caverns and volcano dungeon layouts too.

The thread title gets a prefix, then. I'm not clear on what is from 1.6 or later and what isn't. Thanks!

I've seen a few of the alternative new layouts but I haven't encountered that one yet. It's like a minecart graveyard. 😆

Wait, no Coal??

I haven't seen that level yet though I've spent some good time in the Mines and Skull Cavern and seen many of the new maps. I was hoping for a mountain of coal. Ok ok a little mountain... at least a pile or two! I don't feel like I've missed out then.

Some basic needs, especially early game like clay, coal, seeds, artifacts, copper, etc are so much harder to find now. I’m so glad I’m not a first time player on 1.6 or I would have been so frustrated and confused I would have given up after first few tries.

ETA: I think this update was a focus on endgamers and more challenges for them. Again a newbie is going to really struggle with first playthhroughs. Sad.

I probably need to start another save to see but in early game my feel on these things are

Clay: I was not short, BUT I forgot to make Silos until end of Fall Year 1, so I probably was lol! And I don't make many of the other Clay items until Year 2
Coal: I'm always short in early game and this playthrough was no better. Opening up the Quarry should be a focus as you get Coal nodes there now, but that's Winter Y1 at the earliest
Seeds: If this is Mixed Seeds, then I wasn't short of those but there aren't many uses for them until you get Linus' Special Order Board quest
Artifacts: This RNG looks to be as evil as ever but can't be directly compared unless you do like 100 Farms as it's set by each game seed. I didn't get the Ancient Fruit until Year 2 though I needed a Mineral and not an Artifact to finish the Museum this time. Funny I don't remember which it was but I sure do remember the holdout in my first v1.3.32 save! Ocean Stone.
Copper: I haven't noticed a difference in Copper generation but I needed to repeat the Magma Geode levels in the Mines to get my final Mineral so I ended up with more Silver and Gold as that's what's common on those Floors

Yeah maybe I got a bad world seed but I’ve had trouble on three farms so far. I suck at this game and with each update adding more content and things to accomplish and master it makes my head spin. I really miss the simplicity of Stardew 1.4. It truly was the best imho.

Now I use item ID’s or mod cheats to help me catch up to normal players. I’m not even talking about maxers, just normal people. It takes me so much longer to do much of anything irl or in video game land.

they probably got coal on another new level on 81, when you loot coal or break the cluster barrels, they don't appear, in 1.6 they'll respawn yearly though, I think I got that level on an sc dive and it was loaded with coal

It's a nice helping hand, I could see it being useful in the dawn of year two with resource prices increasing, having a boost for the first month or so could make smelting and crafting with coal a little bit more manageable.
Yes, and I love too how at home geode crushers no longer require coal. It used to be cheaper to take them to Clint’s anyways even with the at home model.

When I got that floor (at level 25) in sc there was no coal and it was my first time stopping exactly at level 25. I've come across itonce more since and there was also no coal. I think it's just decoractive.

I've never had coal carts on floor 81.

Hmmm. I have only started one save on the new version, and I haven't noticed that the resources were scarcer. One thing is that fish smoker that needs coal -- meaning you need more it. Bad NRG is always just that. I'm shamelessly using certain cheaty mods, but none of them is producing resources.

(on the other hand every time I've chosen fruit bats for the cave I've been getting a salmonberry once a week or the like...)
