tips for early game

Walk around. Talk to people, go everywhere the game lets you, interact with everything that looks interactable (I couldn't figure out how to buy seeds for a whole in-game year when I started so yea). Check out the abandoned building near the fountain and the glowing thingy in it. Try to do what your journal tells you to.
If fishing is too hard dw it'll get easier as you level it up. Get a training rod at the fishing shop on the beach, it's 25 g and will make it easier immediately if you need to. Utilize zooming in and out, I didn't know you could do that and passed out at 2 am a lot.

There's nothing you specifically should be doing, because the game is best enjoyed spoilerless when you discover stuff yourself. Don't worry about doing everything not in the best or fastest way - its not punished by the game in any way, the things you can miss are very minor and make no difference.
Everything I said in the first part is prob obvious/what you're already doing. It's more important to enjoy it yourself instead of rushing everything so I'm not gonna tell you much else. Maybe someone else will.

If you intend to pass out at 2 am a lot to get more done, make sure your money is in single or at most double digits. You lose 10% of your money when you pass out, and low funds makes it less painful.

You can leave quest rewards untouched until you need the money. Hoard items for that reason too, and sell when you know you'll need money the next day, like when there's a festival the next day.

First, keep saving up to upgrade the bag for more inventory space. It's at Pierre's.

It's recommended to buy a silo first because it's the cheapest building.

If you want $$$ fast and early, fish fish fish. Also gather lots of wood, save 10 clay and as much fiber as you can. Hoarding is the way

Let's see:
- Early on you run out of energy a lot. Things you can do without much energy include using the scythe and talking to everyone in town. Eating will restore energy but save it for when you need it (ie, don't eat to full energy at midnight right before bed)
- Don't feel like you're doing anything wrong if you take it slow. There's no actual punishment for not getting things done on time, other than sometimes it taking longer to complete the community centre. There's time to min-max on the next farm if that's your tendency. The community centre quests will generally teach you the basics of how to do everything and where.
- crops die at season end. Don't buy and plant a pile of seeds on the last days of the month. Evelyn warns you but it's easy to lose track.
- get the training rod if the fishing game seems too much a PITA. Use it until you can comfortably afford the fiberglass one and use bait. (By then you'll want the better fish that are harder to catch, too)
- in spring, in south cindersap forest just above the sewer entry, there are some kinds of forage you can only find there in that season, and they can grow in abundance. These are handy for a wee bit more money or for an energy boost by eating.
- decide what you enjoy and do that. That's really the core of it.
- Quests you get in the mail will usually sit around indefinitely. Quests you get from the help wanted board have a strict time limit. Don't get them mixed up. Your journal will try to warn you, but...
- poke into all the corners. Look at things. This is the bit I struggled with, especially with bedrooms (Because you don't do that...) and apparently with the woods.

Here's what I can tell from a few years of playing:
  • Play it whatever you like, there's no wrong way of playing stardew valley. Explore any corner, talk to everyone. You'll find more things the more you play.
  • If you need much money early in the game, go fishing until you got a lot of money. It could be boring at some point, but the money you get is worth it. But if you don't wanna rush (kind of cozy player like me), go plant some seeds, water it, chop some woods, break stone, clear your farm, and explore everything.
  • Enjoy the game. Finding something new in the game, at least for me, is the joy that you could get. It makes you curious and wanna play more and more until you discover something new, again and again.
  • You could min-maxing the game (gain as much money as you could in the least time possible), it's good for a challenge, but that required a hard work and could probably stressed you out, especially if you're new to the game. So I would prefer to cozy playing. No need to rush.
  • I don't wanna talk much, you could just explore it yourself, no spoiler.

There's no wrong way to play, and the first season you'll probably not be very efficient with what you do. There's nothing important that you can mess up. This game always gives you a second, third, fourth chance.
There are quests in the mail sometimes that seem overly ambitious. The ones in the mail don't go away, though, so if it takes you five years to figure out - for example - how to bring Pam the drink she wants, it doesn't matter - she'll still be happy.
The quests you can pick up on the board outside Pierre's shop do have a time limit. However, if you don't manage to fill the request in time, nothing happens and nobody gets upset. They just quietly disappear from your journal.

The best way to make money is by fishing. The other ways in the first weeks are farming and foraging. The training rod helps. You can eat stuff you forage or harvest, or you can sell it.
Your menu had tabs for friendship, for crafting, and for game options (among other things). I always find it helpful to scroll down and select "show tool hit location" in the game options because that really helps when you're learning to use the tools.

Other than that, it's fun to just go out and explore. If you are really stuck and get really frustrated, you can always ask and people will help you. Just try to be specific, because nobody wants to accidentlly spoil things for you...
