Switch Controls Question: right joystick click, how?

I have a question about the switch controls, there is a cursor that you can use with the right joystick, but how do you "click" it??
If you're not sure what I mean, the specific reason is spoilers:

Spoiler: spoilers for event during mid winter of your first year

so when you're at the night carnival there's the mermaid show

I know I'm supposed to "click" the shells, but how do I do that on a switch??! I've tried every button I can think of including clicking the joystick & none work, is it just not supported on switch?

Just go up to the shells at the end of the 'show' and click the A button while standing directly in front of the shell you want to push.
