Switch Switch 1.6.15.2 Pet Deletion Bug

I'm playing local co-op multi-player on switch with a farm started after the 1.6 update. We're in Spring 15 Year 3 and the pet (dog) we got at the beginning of the game no longer appears on the farm or in our animal list at all. It had full hearts. Its water dish still exists and is filled. It disappeared right around the time I chose my second mastery (combat) and went in the ginger island cavern for the first time. Is there any way to get the pet back (the original one, not adopting a new one)? It may seem silly, but I'm attached to that set of pixels.

This happened to my wife and I and we couldn't get the dog back. We were able to remove the dog bowl, buy a new one, and adopt a new dog. We just pretended that she got lost and Marnie found her again.
