Linux Steam deck fishing freezes

Started a new save on the deck, no mods.

Having an issue while fishing, so far has only been in the ocean or the mines while fishing. Game will blink after sending out my cast with the fishing rod, sometimes once or multiple times, then the game will go black and then return to the game screen frozen where it was mid-cast. I've found no way to unfreeze the screen other than forcing the game to exit and restarting.

I am able to hear that the game seems to continue behind the frozen screen, I can hear footsteps walking around and I can cast my rod and even hook a fish, but not win the minigame. I have tried to walk into the store and back into town but it hasn't had an effect on the frozen screen.

I have tried validating the game files and uninstalling and reinstalling, the problem remains unchanged after doing this things.

I'm still in my first year and it had done this since the first time I tried fishing in the ocean with the bamboo rod and the fiberglass rod with and without bait. No food buffs have been used yet.

Have had no issue in the river or lakes so far. There have been a few sessions that I've been able to fish in the ocean for a while with no issue, I'll go there first thing and see how far I can go before the problem starts, have had a small amount of success with that. Usually it happens pretty quickly within the first several casts.

I've tried a few things;

Was able to exit through the stairs in the mines after the screen froze, music changed and I could do things but the screen remained frozen at the fishing on the provided floor. When pressing the steam overlay button, would be some strange colorized pixels on the screen.

Took advice from another recent thread about problems with fishing, turned off auto detect controller. This seemed to help after crashing all day trying to fish, I was able to fish for 2 in game days straight in the problem areas. On the third day I did the entire time at the ocean, the screen "blinked" several times but I was able to continue for half the day. Then it just froze on one cast without warning, went to black and came back and went as before.

Will continue to try with auto detect controller off. I am using the #1 suggested community controller layout (named keyboard/mouse or something). No other issues that I've found yet, just started first winter.

So this time it happened after I caught my third fish in the ocean, the screen blinked while the cast was out and I was able to catch the fish. So I decided to leave the area to save what I already got and it froze while walking towards the exit. This is the first time it froze while not actively fishing at the time.

Attached picture of how it froze up on me this time. This is flashing on my screen and I can still hear that I can play but the screen is frozen.

Guess I'm done with the game, it's unplayable like this. Probably still works fine on my computer so if I really want to, then I can start again there.

Hey, are you sure it's connected to fishing in your case? I have the exact same issue, except it happens while beeing in inventory at the Farm, while Mining, while fishing (most often at mining, but i mine a lot so it absolutely possible that it's a biased experience). I deletet/deinstalled everything and started a complete virgin game from a different SD card and was able to play until winter without the bug occurring, so I thought I was able to remove it but nope, it's back and even happened 3 times today. Also in my case i was never able to walk after the blinking. I also tried different Proton versions, playing in desktop mode, tried different settings, etc. No matter what I do, the bug is there. I also found some people with this issue over the internet but noone knows what's the cause it seems. Never had any issue on PC and i played the game A LOT (something around 300 hours). But on deck it just doesn't work, even though it got a green checkmark.

It's really frustrating since the game doesn't even crash and put out an Errorlog or something, it just freezes until you forcefully close it.

No, I don't think I had my inventory open at all when I'd go to the ocean and start fishing. I would start the day run directly there and fish until it happened which was usually pretty quick, or sat the mines.

It sucks because I see a lot of people having no problem completing the game on the deck with mods even and I've done nothing special to mine, just downloaded games from steam and played them. No mods on anything... Guess it just isn't meant to be for me.

Thought I'd fire it up again today and see if I could play and still getting the same issue. I verified the install files again and tried forcing compatibility with the latest proton ge and still no dice.

I feel like maybe I got a bad steam deck and my 1 year was like last week...
