Xbox Split screen co-op not working

My fiancé and I were playing on the base Xbox one when we shut the console off for the night but forgot to exit out of stardew and the next time we played she was controlling both her character and mine switching characters every time she paused, we restarted the game but now I can’t join spit screen coop, please help.

Hi! In our case we can't create a 2nd character, even if both controllers are connected. Both controllers function at the same time on character 1 but when trying the "start multiplayer" option there's no way to connect any of them.
