I Apologize if someone has already asked this but... I’m confused about the gifts on the characters Maru, Demetrius, Pierre and Willy. What exactly is a random farming upgrade, a random mining upgrade, a fishing upgrade and a foraging upgrade? Is it an upgrade to your profession? Or to your starting tool? Thank you!

It refers to the Profession Upgrade cards, as shown and explained on page 21 in the rulebook! Thus in this particular example where you are instructed to gain a random upgrade, you draw and keep a (random) card from the mentioned profession deck.

Can you take an upgrade card even if it's not your profession? For example can I use Willy's gift of a fishing profession upgrade even if I'm a farmer?

Yes you can take it even if you do not personally have that profession. And whenever you gain a profession card, if you already have 2, you decide which 2 to keep. Hope this helps!
