I have 2 ideas for this.
A new item called a Trash Trap. It basically acts as a crab pot but only catches trash. Every day it would have a 50% chance of catching an item of trash. This could be useful if you're low on resources but have plenty of recycling machines. I tend to get in this spot with how I play, I get allot of my coal from recycling drift wood and trash (the grey blob looking thing). Plus I craft ALLOT of preserves jars and bee houses so not having to spend precious coal to smelt quartz when I can make it from trash is a big win for me.
My other idea is to do with the trash item Broken Glasses. Right now, Broken Glasses have a 100% chance of giving 1 piece of refined quartz, so does the Broken CD. There is no difference between them. What if Broken Glasses had a 30% chance of giving 1-3 iron and 70% chance of still giving 1 refined quartz? Just something to differentiate Broken Glasses from a Broken CD during recycling.
Edit: I decided to come back and add something. I think the item Soggy Newspaper needs to give completely different materials when recycled. Instead of giving torches or the very very VERY small chance of a bolt of cloth, recycling Soggy Newspaper should give 1-3 wood or 1-3 fiber. Paper is made out of wood and in some cases plant material like hemp. I can't think of any time I've ever used torches on my farm except to craft maybe 2 jack-o-lanterns.
