My attempt to get my farm up and running was going badly... then, it got worse.. I went to the mines, inventory full up, and a man decided to give me a rusty sword. I was unable to take it and tried to give it back to him to hold it. I now have inventory space but not only can no longer find the man, but also the sword as well.

While less efficient, you can use your other tools to go into the mines and defeat the 5 slimes needed to unlock the adventurer's guild, where you can find better swords and the guy that gave you one.

Use the scythe to defeat the first 10 slimes. It has the best range of the tools. After that, buy a weapon.

Definitely destroy any wooden casks and chests in the mines because you might find a weapon.

Sorry to hear you'll have to do the scythe thing, for a while, bummer. It could happen to any of us, there's just so much shiny stuff in the mines!
