Big big agree on this. What I will say is that it can get a bit complicated coding polyamory/ethical nonmonogamy, from a game dev perspective. With one partner you only have to worry about the logistics of person A and person B interacting with each other. But if you also have C as well, how do both A and B interact with them? Is it a V relationship (A is romantically with B and C, but B and C are not), or a triad (A is with B and C, B is with A and C, C is with A and B)? Do you go with one or the other, or allow the player to choose? Do you have separate events for if you get with B and then C, or C and then B, or both at the same time? Are there separate events for being with B or C in a mono relationship/B or C in a poly relationship/B and C in a poly relationship? Is there still an option for infidelity alongside an option for ethical monogamy and ethical polyamory, in case someone wants to play as a more morally dubious farmer?
I say this all as a poly person who knows the struggles of coding poly lol. There’s a difference between “player dates multiple people” and “player is in a polyamorous relationship”. It’s subtle, but it makes a big difference in poly rep feeling like everyone is in agreement on the poly, ya know? And this isn’t to say that it isn’t possible! Hades is a really good example of allowing the player to choose either monogamous romance or polyamorous romance (or no romance!) Without spoiling too much, I think its portrayal of relationships in this regard is really nuanced in a way I don’t see in a lot of games.
I think it would be fun to have some kind of cutscene with two or more partners at a time discussing their poly deal. Could also lead to some interactions between characters who don’t interact often! Idk I like character interactions.
Next request then is to be able to seduce non marriage NPCs?
I personally like the way it is as you have higher replayability. And actually you already can "cycle" through the candidates with marriage each and divorce.
There is also an easteregg when date all candidates at the same time...
In my eyes SDV is about choice (what to do first, what to skip for a day etc.), so it makes sense to choose also with the bachelorettes or bachelors.
In this vein, though, I think there still is replayability with poly romance. You can choose to only be with one bachelor(ette) in one save, or two in another, or none in yet another!
