Pirate's wife quest - no spoilers

I have stumbled upon the pirate's wife quest. I am not much of a puzzle person so I checked the wiki to see what to do.

My question is: if I had not used the wiki, how in the world would I have figured out who to give what? If I had tried to give an item to the wrong person, would I have gotten a message or would it have given the item to the wrong person, quest over?

Even if it doesn't feel immediately obvious at first, in retrospect each person you trade off to will make some degree of sense in hindsight (either based on that character's normal activities, or in relation to their loved gifts, or some other facet of their person). Trial and error won't punish you, so feel free to look high and low.

I was so worried about this too so I used the wiki haha. I wish I would have known sooner! It would have been fun to figure it out without the help.

In general, Stardew Valley isn't a game where you can ever miss out on anything. (Well, except a few heart event cutscenes.) Like others have said, you can just trial and error it.

Here's the logic behind who gets what:
War memento - given to Kent because he was in the way
Gourmet tomato salt - given to Gus because he likes cooking (as shown by the cutscene where he gives you the jukebox, and the fact that he owns a saloon)
Stardew valley rose - given to Sandy because she loves flowers from Stardew Valley (Emily tells you this, IIRC, and also her loved gifts include all the foraged flowers)
Advanced TV remote - given to George because he spends all his time watching TV
Arctic shard - given to the Wizard because it has otherworldly light and the Wizard knows how to deal with magic.
Wriggling worm - given to Willy because it's bait and he fishes
Pirate's locket - given to Birdie because, well, the whole point of this was to get her a memento of her husband.

I was so proud of myself for getting the first three on the first try, and then I took like five tries before an NPC gave me a hint on who to give the TV remote to. :P
I think I just straight up forgot George existed.

I did wonder if Pam would have enjoyed the deluxe remote, because she asks you to send her a battery earlier in the game. I really liked this quest. They way it involved the NPCs was nice.

She does have a unique response when you try to give it to her... it's too complicated for her

Yeah, she was the first person I tried. And then I got super confused and started just trying random people and completely didn't think of the person it's actually meant for.
