Issue new to modding and clueless

maybe it's just sleep deprivation, but i can't for the life of me figure out what i'm doing wrong here. i brought stardew for my windows pc via steam, i downloaded the latest version of SMAPI, i've unzipped all my mods into the mods folders and i've ensured none of the mods are more than 1 folder deep. despite all this, no matter what i do, the game still runs vanilla. i know i must be doing something wrong, as the title states, im new to modding. if anyone has any advice i'll take it bc at this point im ready to just throw my whole laptop away smh

Can you check wether you're starting the game via StardewModdingAPI real quick before throwing your laptop away? ;)
If you're opening "Stardew Valley" it will load the original game without the mods.
