if a player sells 150 or more crop from a single type of crop, he unlocks a new crop as a more profitable subspecies or similarity EX:
Onion > Purple Onion > White Onion
Tomato > Cherry Tomato
Green Bellpepper > Red Bellpepper > Yellow Bellpepper
Corn > Black Corn
Potato > Yam > Sweet Potato
Cave carrot > Carrot > Purple Carrot
Etc...
More time to grow but more money and utilities.

Green/yellow/orange/red bell peppers are different stages of ripeness of the same pepper. If anything, those would all come from the same plant being harvested after a different number of days.

Interesting, I never knew this. :)
 
This is similar to Farm Togethers mechanics. You plant the base crop, level it, and eventually open new crops for more experience and financial gain. I love that game, so this would be interesting if implemented into Stardew.
