Windows "Join LAN Game" only -- no code option for online

Unable to play multiplayer online.. downloaded game on xbox PC game pass on PC (windows 11 64bit). haven't played Stardew on this computer before, no issues with other online games.
did some googling and tried the
Visual C++ Redistributable Packages, tried different installs and locations, turning firewall off briefly during install and connection... nothing working. if I try hosting a farm i also dont get a code to share... and ideas of what else I can try?

playing on v1.6.8 build 24119
