Recently started playing SDV again. I noticed that when I keep D button pressed for the longer time (when I go right through the valley or through the mines), my chosen tool switches to some other position in inventory, even though it isn't my intention. For example I go through the stones in mine with my pickaxe (pressing D so I can go right and clicking mouse in order to break stones), when suddenly the game will switch pickaxe to hoe or some other inventory item. The same with fighting; you do not want to suddenly realize you (try to) fight bats with something other than your trusted blade...
