1.6 Update I have an idea and it feels weird that ConcernedApe didn't think of it before I did.

So, you may know that I am very infuriated that the 1.6 update released on PC all the way back in MARCH, and despite the fact that it's JULY, it still hasn't released on console. And then people wonder why I'm going ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ insane.

This event has turned Stardew Valley from something that made me feel intensely high levels of dopamine into something that causes negative thoughts for me whenever I think about how much longer it's going to be before it's released on console.

In Subnautica: Below Zero, I found a poem by Emily Dickinson saying that "Hope ... perches in the soul" and "never stops [singing its tune]". It's a metaphor meaning that hope is always existent and helps you in times of despair.

However, I've been in despair for over 5 months, and I still can't find hope for the 1.6 update on console anywhere; even remotely. Every day, it feels like my soul gets closer and closer to blackening and eventually the tiniest glow inside of it is going to fade.

I don't understand why the update is taking so long to release, but here is what this big thread is leading to...

Why can't CA temporarily postpone Haunted Chocolatier, and work on releasing the update on console first? It's a much better way to prevent millions of former Stardew fans from becoming depressed, than the current asinine plan he is employing.

Why? Well allow me to demonstrate, *ahem* as if I even have to.

So, hardly anybody even knows what Haunted Chocolatier will even be like, and/or if it'll be better than Stardew Valley. But I guarantee there are WAY more people excited for the console 1.6 update than they are for Haunted Chocolatier.

Another reason this is a good idea is because ConcernedApe is LITERALLY the only employee who works on Stardew.

So, it's not hard to imagine that working exclusively on the console update FIRST would be more time- and cost-efficient, and could possibly even make the process... FASTER! What a concept!

So, could somebody please explain why CA isn't dedicating his energy to the 1.6 console update FIRST in line, or if he even is or not?

Haunted chocolatier isn’t being worked on, it hasn’t been worked on in months

CA is actively and constantly working towards the mobile and console releases that is his main goal right now.

He isn’t working alone and he has a team developing and porting, it’s not a simple process. Especially since this is supposed to be a final update (at least for a WHILE) so he’s working on ironing out as many issues as possible. It’s far harder to release daily patches on console like he can for pc.

You also make the mistake in thinking he’s only doing stuff like this for profit, if it were so then why is he releasing all of these updates for free when they could be paywalled?

this isn’t an idea just you have thought of, it’s what’s actively happening. All good things come with time, it’s valuable to keep in mind that undue hast is an impediment to progress, what we aren’t getting right now is being worked on so it can be that much better soon.

You've made a lot of assumptions there with no evidence which boil down to:

I'm frustrated that v1.6 hasn't been released on [insert platform here] yet. Many people are understandably are as impatient as you are but making baseless accusations rarely reflect poorly on the accused, often reflecting in the opposite direction.

Try this: What kind of person has CA proven himself to be in the past? Do you think that's changed? Do you think that logistics just sort themselves out or do some things end up being significantly more complicated and take far longer than planned sometimes?

I think CA has earned the benefit of the doubt and if you have any about him, you should read the Developer Blog leading up to Stardew Valley v1.0. They are very illuminating about how you anticipate and plan things to go as compared to how they eventually went. Spoiler: The game came out years after it was planned and missing a major feature we take for granted today.

This is the nature of things. Please be patient even though sometimes it's difficult to do so.

Thanks for explaining that. I didn't know he was still working on the console update, but thank you for letting me know!

The deterioration of patience is something I have been witnessing a lot for the past 10.years or so. Some people call it a need for instant gratification, which is only partially true. It more boils down to a nownownow corporate mindset that only wants your money and that's how they advertise, and YT shorts and tiktok have not made anything any better. Like, at all.

As a comparison assessment, eastern audiences, especially Japanese, will wait for a very very long time for a sequel or update to come out for their favorite series or game. I'm talking 3 years or more in some cases. While the corporate consumerism that is the American market practically demands a sequel every year if possible, and updates far more often.

The logic behind this is that eastern oriental markets are much more willing to be patient for a good product, while western developers will push out games before they're done and then rely on updates to fix them so they can meet a deadline (just look at what happened when th CyberPunk), typically November or December because that is prime shopping season for their target audience.

That said, I am grateful for CA and what he does, and I'm also grateful that we don't have to pay for updates. I know the 1.5 update was super plagued with problems for mobile, and I'm sure CA has learned from that. Even so, the 1.5 update didn't take too long to come out for console, however, due to the perceived larger size of this update we might have to wait a little bit longer than last time for the console update. I can only urge patience, and hope that you find ways to cope through it all, and just know that there are many people like you here who are waiting as patiently as possible for the next update.

Best regards,
-LRR

Honestly, as a console player myself, I feel you immensely. Its kinda insane that we have to wait such a long time. Im not sure why CA is still solo with how large the game is. I understand that sometimes we have to be patient but 5 months is crazy. The playerbase shouldn't be divided like this for so long.

I was playing 1.4 for a year while pc users were playing 1.5, and when the iOS release came for 1.5 i was like "ah, so this is what all the Ginger Island stuff is about." I want CA to take his time with the iOS port. I would love to be able to equip a seed pack and swipe across prepped tiles to sow rather than drop seeds one by one. I would like something similar for harvesting perennial crops. I would like a scroll bar in the journal window so I can see all the rows of a large quest like Qi's prismatic grange. I'm happy to let the PC users be the guinea pigs for the new game mechanics, and I'm hoping for a smooth port to iOS more than a speedy release.

This is a common misconception, but he actually isn't. He hasn't been a solo developer since version 1.2 in 2017. After that, for update 1.3 Tom Coxon (now at Bytten Studio) handled the multiplayer code for the game, and every update after that has had different developers helping work on the game including Alex Erlandson for 1.4, and Arthur Lee for 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6, with others joining to work on the 1.6 update. ConcernedApe continues to be the lead developer and it's his art, his music, and his writing behind the characters, but it's been a long time since he's worked entirely alone. You can see more information about who has contributed to the game at https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Stardew_Valley#Development, or within the game itself by clicking on the ? button on the title screen to view the game's credits.

In addition to that, once an update is is made a available for PC, an additional team at Sickhead Games works with ConcernedApe to bring that update to console and mobile platforms.

I think a lot of people understandably confuse the fact that ConcernedApe created the game entirely on his own with the idea that things continue to work that way, but I would encourage people to open up the game's credit screen and see just how many people have contributed to Stardew Valley over the years!

Yeah no problem at all, there's a lot going on behind the scenes that's hard to keep up with, I don't blame you for not knowing. However, it's always smart to keep an open mind when approaching subjects you aren't sure about, and try to take things in a positive way too; in this case, the longer the update is in development for, the more flushed out and feature rich it'll be when it reaches console and mobile.

For now, make the most of the stuff that's in 1.5, clay farm a bunch, buy a load of stuff from the casino, etc.

Y’all who are griping about this are right to be frustrated, but not at the developer. It’s the mega corp platforms he’s working with for console and mobile that take their sweet time. They roll out the games that make the most money first, then everything else second. CA does make money off this game but it is a fraction compared to the big dot games most popular now. You pay for updates, you pay extra to advance more quickly. CA never does that. I play mobile and if last major update was any indicator we are talking years not months. I also strongly agree with Lone Ranger that we have an instant gratification culture. When I was young a video could take a year or more to get to vhs/dvd from the time it was in the theaters. We waited for everything. Literally everything. And honestly if you are truly feeling despairing and hopeless about a video game then I suggest you read the current news and state of the world. This will seem like absolutely nothing in comparison. Just an idea.
