How do you make your animals happier and healthier?

My chickens and cow have a heater and plenty of hey but the game still says they are thin and there's scribbles above their heads. Any advice?

If they're thin, it means they didn't eat the day before. The scribbles above their heads means they're annoyed that they didn't eat the day before. If they did not eat grass, they eat hay at the end of the day. Was there hay there when you went to bed on the previous night?

Yes, there's always plenty of hey so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

And you took the hay from the hopper to put it on the feeding bench? (I just have to make sure.)
