Hi!
Maybe someone here can help, but I'm running out of places to turn for support which is starting to tell me I may not find a solution... thanks in advance for any help offered, this one's a bit of a mess so bear with me.
I'd say roughly a year or so ago I played through the game in multiplayer with my girlfriend on a separate laptop, and we ended up adding a bunch of mods towards the end. We put down the game, but it's since had this big update that has enticed us to give it another playthrough. Trouble is, her laptop since died. She has a new Chromebook, and I actually did get the game running by figuring out how to do some linux work and getting steam installed, but of course the linux/windows platform issue precludes net play. Never fear! The game has split screen now! Yay! Right? Well, Steam had auto-updated the game and broken all of the mods, but when I pulled up Vortex and turned off all of the mods, Steam still couldn't launch the game. I tried all combinations of verifying file integrity, changing install paths, reinstalling steam, clearing the download cache, and rebooting the computer. If I put it on drive C:, I get "Failed to start process for Stardew Valley : 'The system cannot find the path specified.' (0x3)" and if I put it on drive D:, I get a "failed to update, missing executable" error. I can browse to the install folder and launch the executable directly, it turns out, and it seems to run fine; this is where I was reminded that linux and windows don't play nice. So I tried splitscreen, and when it asks me to press start on a controller, it doesn't recognize my controllers. I'm thinking that has something to do with the fact that most of my controllers go through steam, so I try a good old xbox 360 I had laying around and it still won't bring in player 2.
I'm at my wits end here. I spent all afternoon fooling with it and I'm rather discouraged. It's to the point where I guess I won't get to experience the new content, because now that I've played multiplayer I don't know if I could stand to play solo... not to mention my GF would be left out, or have to play solo herself, which she won't do.
