PC [HELP] How to resurrect a save game that no longer successfully hosts multiplayer on local LAN

Can anyone suggest what fixes a savegame file might need to re-establish the ability to host multiplayer on the local LAN ?

One day my daughters were not able to play together - a real mystery, assume all network / OS / obvious stuff was checked. Eventually, I tried hosting from an older co-op game they had not used for a couple of weeks - that worked fine. Both games were correctly created co-op and both have cabins etc and played together for hours in them.

You can toggle back and forth and one save reliably hosts, the other not any more - the other play just sits at the "Connecting.." screen until it times out with fail.

Clearly some state has gotten into a bad place in the one savegame - the question is how best to debug and potentially edit the file to restore this. I'm using the offline GOG version of the game (v1.5.4) on Mac computers.

I tried to find a log file, to see if errors or assertions were firing to give a clue - but I can't find such a thing, at least in the standard (non SMAPI) installed version

Tips much appreciated
