This may be a bug I'm not sure. I have grown the melon. But when I go to him he says that "it is still ding-ee small. Come back when its bombo big..."

If it isn't ready to harvest, wait for it to harvest. If it is ready, then all I can think of is to grow another one. I was able to complete the quest just fine without a giant melon.

I'm assuming that the frog's dialogue means that the melon has been planted on the ginger island farm. If it hasn't, then it will need to be planted there.
