PC [HELP] Change Difficulty Settings on Old Game (including spoiler for 1.5)

I heard that there was a way to change the difficulty of the monsters, but is this for new games only?

So I got through the Golden Walnut door on Ginger Island to find Mr Qui. He set some challenges for the regular mines and Skull Caverns, but now both have become insanely difficult to the point of impossible. Having already died numerous times, I'm begging for a way for me to at least stay alive for a little while. They've gone from challenging but fun, to downright miserable, never going in there again.

Please help.

Once the challenge ends (check your journal), the mines will return to normal. In the future you can just avoid choosing those challenges
