Do you mean he'll be stuck/vanish or that he doesn't want to take on the Volcano alone?
He should just restart at the beginning of the day if he logs back in. If he wants a battle buddy, you can post a request in multiplayer.

I never did the volcano before, but having a good weapon and spamming food is how I usually do the mines. Walkthroughs are also useful I guess.

I'm getting into the mines but haven't used a walk through or anything, I just kinda randomly pick ladders
I'm new and not quite sure what the endgame of the mines are yet. Should I be considering more where I'm going

Usually its best to try and take out as many monsters as you can to see if a ladder drops early so that you save energy, then you just mine stuff for a while. This is good if you want to do the mines as fast as you can and make progress every day. For the later parts of the mines there are debuffs that can effect you but thats about it. You just have to rush those enemies first and do everything else. You shouldn't worry that much about the mines in my opinion, since if you take out monsters you will eventually get better loot for weapons that naturally lets you kill stuff easier, plus you get armor every milestone or so.
Actually, one thing you should do though is upgrade your pickaxe when it is getting harder to break rocks. It takes a while, but those rocks hinders progress a lot. I think you only need to do it twice.

Thanks for your advice. I want to mention, that there are no ladders in the volcano dungeon and my friend has a fully upgraded pickaxe.

There are spoilers in this answer. The main problem in the volcano is finding the exit to the next level. Sometimes there are buttons you have to step on to open a gate to the exit - sometimes more than one. If your friend is having difficulty with this, they can take a screenshot of the level to find the exit and the buttons, if there are any (if there's no gate, there are no buttons). Also, it's advisable to have the slime protection ring in the volcano because the slimes there are the toughest in the game. Having immunity from them makes the job of getting through much easier. Other than that, have lots of high energy food (remember in single player, when you eat, all the enemies pause - but not in multiplayer), an upgraded watering can to cross lava when necessary (at least steel is advised), the best weapon and pickaxe available, some bombs to help open a path at times, and keep your nerve. Also, halfway through the volcano levels, if you have 5 gold walnuts you can open up a permanent exit to leave at that point if you're running out of time or energy. Once you get used to the place, it's a source of certain much-needed items you may revisit pretty often.
