Please let us have our birthdays in stardew! its a cute idea to have npcs you gained hearts with send you gifts and your spouse remembering/forgetting it. Its also cute if we can throw birthday parties at the saloon! Thank you!! <3
From an in-universe perspective, a single villager’s birthday sees everything continue as normal. Why would it change, for the farmer? They do seem to grasp the concept of “It’s your birthday, here’s a thing”, though, so the Spouse remembering, is a good idea.
However, I would advise it as a pre-6am cutscene, like the wedding, or a certain someone’s 14 Heart (
How PenPen changed the sheets, while I was sleeping there, is certainly a talent.
Love that gal. Heh) because people won’t want to lose most of the day.
(I hear you raise the Flower Dance, the Luau, and the Fair. The Luau’s 120pts for every villager is actually quite a few days work, when you consider how many villagers there are, and the fair? The Stardrop. Can’t, and won’t, defend the Flower Dance. Its big benefit is the 250pts to your Spouse, but if you’re keeping them happy, you don’t need that!)
And then there’s if the Spouse wants to. While some spouses might want to gift, ‘to try and fix things up’ if at a low heart count, hasn’t Stardew gone out of its way to ensure that no Spouse is better than another statistically? It would make sense for a ‘BirthdayScene’ check (or whatever it would be called) to start at if a Spouse is happy enough to say anything.
And then, as the concept of “It’s your birthday, here’s a gift” is a thing in the valley (as we know from birthday related dialogue), there’s the question of how it’s decided what gift you get. You can’t go off of what you’ve sold the most, because you’d be getting 1 ‘Sap’, and it can’t be the farmer’s favourite thing, as it’ll tempt everyone to set ‘Stardrop’, and there’s a yearly Max Energy boost exploit. Maybe the RNG for gift-giving at ‘Feast of the Winter Star’ would be useful here, and the gift could be from a pre-set list of items related to whichever of your skills has the most XP (building off of that this stat is tracked beyond level 10, for the Masteries), for example, a bar or ores, if you have the most XP in mining, or anywhere from Seaweed fo any non-legendary fish, if you have the most in fishing (come on, you’d feel pretty good if your Spouse birthday gifted you an Octopus)
Nothing like a good, hard think, to get the brain in gear, before I race Crimson Devil. You wouldn’t think his car’s a widebody Subaru…
