Grandpa's Past Dialogue?

I started playing Stardew Valley just months ago back in June, which was still 1.5 on Mobile. So I don't know what is it like back then. I'm curious when I read this in Grandpa's wiki:

What was Grandpa's first dialogue? Was it really that harsh? I couldn't imagine sweet old Grandpa saying mean things to the farmer 😂

There’s a mod that restores the dialogue which included this screenshot.

Wow, OG Grandpa tells you to take it easy and only open that envelope when you really need it, when your dead-end job has squeezed all the life out of you like an empty toothpaste tube. In the depths of existential depression you drag out your one last power-up, Grandpa's Letter.

I left you a farm
It's a freakin' mess
It's the butt of the local carpenter's jokes
I ditched the place 'cuz I couldn't hack it
Mushrooms in the cellar probably aren't poisonous
Some local guy's got his eye on it for a bat sanctuary
The corrupt local politician'll be watchin' ya, he's my old pal. But not yours.

Befriend everyone. Grow every crop in existence. Make tons of g. Learn to fight, you weakling. Mining's good for your lungs. Shame the local fisherman with your angling mastery. Prevent the destitute locals from gathering Nature's bounty. Singlehandedly revitalize the local economy.

Make It All Work.

In 2 Years.

OR ELSE

Freakin' old school grandpa makes Joja look like a reasonable option.

My feelings about Grampa are best expressed by this shot of his Shrine on Paddy's farm:

Yep. That's the Joja Cola machine right on his grave.

Paddy is doing a challenge: Fill a Big Shed with Crystalaria without the iridium spitting statue of perfection. After he achieves that I'll light the fourth candle.

But yes, I remember the language from 1.4 and 1.5.

In those updates the dialogue was much the same, his original dialogue was patched out pretty quick, only a couple months into the game release back in 2016. I had first played back then but never got to year 3 so didn't get the dialogue but I remember watching old youtube videos at the time, Ereo gave a snippit above of what it looked like, more humourous than outright cruel but a little to sharp for many which is part of why it was changed

And the frog on ginger island conversation, was unfortunately, toned down.

I preferred his crude lines and much more boorish expressions!

Why were those censored out? They all added to a "cult-ish atmosphere", which is usually priceless, be it in real life or not. Especially the mean Grandpa, would remind somebody of the "Ninja Boy" (Igano Kabamaru) anime's freaking Seizo!

I think the frog was changed because that type of speech is usually used to look down on the people using it. It's insulting and I'm glad it was rewritten to be less offensive. (I'm sure it wasn't intended to be offensive, as CA just doesn't seem like that kind of person, but it was.)

I think Paddy was still on 1.5 when he encountered Gourmand Frog. Dialect aside, I found the wheat conversation, in particular, to have a pretty strong creepy-uncle vibe. Now I might want to actually get around to starting a new save to see the new dialog.

Me on the other hand, am not a fan of developers making changes to the product of their hard work, as well initial artistic expression, much; especially whenever this is due to some snow... i mean users of said product, finding offense. Where and when there isn't any and isn't intended, either.

To be perfectly honest, i initially put the game on ice, because Haley's tone to the player was harsh and Haley coincided to be like a certain real person's in-game character clone or something, but i quickly found the fault was with me (my perception, specifically) and i shouldn't make own (personal) assumptions, or jump to conclusions.

Exactly because C.A. is a great dev, it would be best for everybody, to preserve his initial vision of the project. Not put hands to its tone at points, just because a couple of people got triggered.

Generally, I agreed with you, but one of the things about the creative process is that you can come back to your own writing and find bits cringeworthy, even if no one ever said anything to you. In my book, v1.5 Gourmand Frog was who he was, and v1.6 Gourmand Frog is who he is, and I am glad to have experienced both.

Personally I think what makes CA a great dev is that he is constantly striving for improvement, whether it's honing game mechanics and including new content and quality of life improvements, or recognizing that certain dialogue doesn't fit the cozy and inclusive mood that was, at least from what I've read, a significant part of Stardew Valley's actual initial creative vision, and changing it to match.
