I did a brief recon on the island and dug up 3 walnuts. Are they supposed to disappear from your backpack when you return to town?

Like a in a item in your inventory? They should show up in your skills tab.

Golden walnuts are a pain. You can easily make 1,300,000 in game money... I suggest you pay the Joja parrot up and go about your business!

Golden walnuts never appear in your backpack to start with. Like SuprisedPikachuBob3 said, they will show yp in your skills tab.
