For starter players, you would probably want a friend. Making friends is easy if you give them Gifts. By giving a gift, you will either make a friend or not. To tell the good gifts from the bad, here is a chart:

I love the gift giving in the game and I kinda have a system now. With two loved gifts each week, you gain a heart almost every Sunday. Liked gifts progress slower, but everyone likes tree fruit.

Spring: Pam loves parsnips, Evelyn loves tulips, George loves leeks, Demitrius & Maru love strawberries.
Summer: peppers for Shane & Lewis, Poppies for lovely Penny, grapes for Vincent, spangle for Caroline, sunflower for Haley
Fall: Fairy rose for Jas, pumpkins for Willy.
Trees: oranges for Gus, peaches for Robin, pomegranates for Elliot.
Mining: Abigail, Clint, Emily, and dwarf love amethyst. Marnie and Jodi love diamonds. Sebastian loves frozen tears. Wizard loves solar & void essence.
Others: rabbit foot for Kent, Alex, and Pierre. Void eggs for Krobus. Cactus fruit for Sam & linus. Crocus for Sandy. Pickles for Harvey, goat cheese for Leah.

They all have other loved gifts, and there are universal loves as well, which you can find more about in the wiki. These are just my particular favorite items to save for gifting.
