Whenever my buddy goes past level 1 of the mines the game starts to load and then gets stuck in the load screen.

Not sure what is causing it. We removed the skull cavern elevator and ladderlocator mods and they didn't fix anything.
There are some mod updates available, but we had played a different farm a few days ago and it didn't have issues (we ran into mod compatibility issues, so I fixed those and then made a new farm)
