Issue Game Closes without Error Listing Saved Game Files

My son updated his Stardew Valley game, and I updated all his mods.
Now, when he started the game with mods enabled, here is what happens:
- Command prompt window displays showing SMAPI messages
- Stardew Valley graphic displays with buttons along the bottom
- Clicked LOAD
- Yellow box with "Looking for saved games" is displayed
- Few seconds later, game closes without errors and we are back to the windows desktop.

I tried again, but this time selected "New"....game crashed again

Tried running without mods, and the two saved game files he has were displayed. I did not try to select a saved game.

This morning I noticed an updated SMAPI is available.
I uninstalled the existing SMAPI, and installed the updated 4.1.5.

Ran Stardew Valley and the saved games were displayed, and loaded fine!

Installed Stardew Valley update 1.6.12 and everything still works.
So maybe it was a SMAPI issue which caused this problem.
