Fences in a slime hutch

If a farmer puts fences inside a slime hutch to help corral the slimes and keep from getting attacked, does it deteriorate the way it does when it's outdoors on the farm? I really don't use fences on my farms because I get annoyed with having to repair them, so if they do this inside too, I'm going to stick with using my slime charmer ring.

That’s a good question. My interior fences never degraded but I did end up destroying the slime hutch. It may not have lasted a year.

The fewer fences you have, and the more durable fences you have, your spouse can actually quite possibly keep them all maintained without you needing to do anything. For me, all of what one might do with fences I do with tea bushes... except where I need gates, because they need fencing on either side. That is literally just 2 fenceposts per gate on my entire farm. That's not many.

Before your inner Gil takes over, I would like to point out that Hardwood Fences last for a little over 5 years, and Gates last for 3.5 years. So if you are going to try, make sure you test with Wood Fences. But even those last for two whole seasons, so be prepared to hibernate.

But in my opinion, fences aren't worth it until you can get Hardwood, which for me is typically late Spring/early Summer. Five years down the road it will be Spring Year 6, and that Golden Clock will be mine, all mine. My longest standing save is at the end of Year 4, so even if I didn't have fence-fixer Maru and a Golden Clock to help me out, my Gates would have just started breaking.

And those Hardwood Fences from Spring Year 1 still have another year of life in them.

UPDATE! I put a couple of pieces of standard wooden fence into my slime hutch and sure enough, they eventually degraded. I think I'll be sticking with using the slime charmer ring to visit my boisterous little pals and collect their slime.

Even with fences, you need at some point to go with the slimes to gather a ill placed egg. So, I agree with you that the slime charmer ring (possibly stored in a nearby chest) is the best option.

You can put floor where the slimes are, the balls will only appear on blank tiles, even if it's outside the slime enclosure.

No, you'll get one ball for every five slimes. As long as there are enough empty tiles, they will spawn. So if you go in every day, 4 empty tiles are enough.

That's how the fruit bat cave works (fewer open tiles means fewer results), not the slime hutch.

I've been keeping a slime charmer ring in a chest just outside my hutch so I can swap out one of the rings I'm wearing for it. I rather like to see the little slimes following me around like puppies while I collect the slime balls.

You could farm hardwood and stock up on hardwood for hardwood fences! I definitely think it’s worth it. Hardwood fences look good and they last for a very long time.

I had a similar line of thinking and recently put 2 or 3 seasonal decorations in the slime hutch. Since I'm using the ring, I decided to try to make it look a little more like a home for the slimes instead of a bare room. I'm planning on putting some houseplants in there too, and maybe a clay pot or three with some flowers.
