I was just curious, so decided to ask!
I personally really like clubs for the special ability, if I need space, or buy myself some time to eat, or clear the chaos a little to go get to the ladder, I can just right click to knock away all the enemies around. Also it can hit the flying monsters before they can reach me. Clubs are pretty slow thoigh, so I usually enhance my galaxy hammer (most of the time I have that when I reach the forge, I buy it as soon as I can) with an emerald

Club and dagger require brainpower which I do not have. They require planning, finesse and timing. A level of excellence in combat which I don't and will never have.

What I can do is stick the sharp bit at the far end of a thingy closer to the menacing thing than to my soft self. Usually. Often and really overall in a satisfactory manner. So the Sword or wooden stick or similar is the level of combat I can manage. In a game with a bow, I'll choose that as I can generally find a safe place to gather my thoughts, read the manual, consult the Wiki (in-game of course not IRL 😅 🧐 ) and usually get a shot or two off before getting killed and eaten by the dino/bad guy/enemies-to-lovers plotline during the enemy phase.

Sword easy: flail around wildly and keep pointy bit reasonably close to the bad thing, maybe the wind I'm creating will blow it away

I completely understand the appeal of the simplicity of swords (swing swing swing until a monster dies or you have to eat), but I really love the skill it takes to get good at using the club and dagger, especially if you introduce animation cancelling which brings about a whole new set of possibilities for exact swing timing.

It's just because I am a sweat but the little combat micromanaging is so much fun, I usually use a hammer and dagger combo for most of the game, as the hammer excels at bulk area damage while the dagger is much faster, and is excellent at disposing of single targets/monsters stacked atop of eachother, especially if they'd take high knockback from the hammer.

I have easily spent upwards of a thousand hours in the mines/skull cavern/volcano alone though, so it's definitely come with time.

I agree with this. Though swords are great, I love the challenge it presents to get good at clubs and daggers. Also they are very satisfying to use when used correctly.
I very much enjoyed watching @FilthyGorilla's expert use of the club here.

Farmhand
Playing on mobile, definitely sword. The iffiness of the controls makes the auto-attack mode a good idea. Only problem comes when the farmer goes into auto-attack mode when the monster is around the corner of a rock and can't be reached yet, and the monster is unable to get around the rock because it too thinks it's close enough to attack. Most noticeable with dust sprites.

I prefer using clubs for the grounded enemies and daggers for flying enemies. Clubs I find deal a lot of damage with the special attack and their high knockback doesn't affect the grounded enemies too much, and daggers' special attacks freeze the enemy so they don't create the issue of flying enemies being extra susceptible to knockback.

I also play on mobile and I started with auto-attack (I mean the game offered me to turn it on when I first entered the mines so I did)
Much later I decided I want to try doing all the combat myself and it turned out it's not that hard, and a lot more fun. Also it was kinda annoying that normally I'd play with tap-to-move, joystick and 2 buttons but whenever there were monsters around, I'd have to change it to auto attack. I'm really glad I stopped using it because it's bot as fun, a little buggy like you described and so.etimes I don't want to fight and can just ignore the monsters

Cuddlebug

Sodbuster
Since I'm more a Defender than Attacker my weapon of choice is usually the sword, sometimes the Club, depends on what I find first after getting the rusty sword 😏

The sword is great for offense. I'm unlike Cuddlebug who's a defender I'm more of a brute force guy. If I die I die if I don't I'm coming out on top. I don't even like blocking lol. The slingshot is awful for my playstyle and I don't really get a chance to use the hammer as it's been a while since I last played the game. I never used the club either but yeah sword all the way.

I just use swords, there's not much way to go wrong with them as long as it isn't a really underpowered sword for the enemies

It's also just what I'm used to, other weapons always come later along so I just end up sticking with the sword that works fine already (getting used to new weapons is hard :c)
