Error message breakdown:
- I have experienced this about 4 times now, and the error started roughly 3/5/26 and continues to 3/9/26 (day of this post). It happens when collapsing from exhaustion at 2Am, or sometimes after sleeping. The error message happens directly after the black screen fade from exhaustion or sleeping. It does not move on to the daily breakdown of sold items, or anything else after the error message, so there is no way to save for the day. To leave the error screen you have to exit out of the game, go back to the Nintendo Switch menu, and click back into Stardew. The day starts over as if you exited the game without saving, so all progress of that previous day before the error, is lost.
- From what I can tell this issue started after the most recent bug patch for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (as of February 19, 2026), primarily addressing a crafting issue.
- Full error message reads: “There was a problem, and the software needed to close.” With an exclamation mark icon above it.
- Nintendo Switch 2, Ver. 21.2.0. And Stardew Valley is updated to the most recent, 1.6.15.13 update.
- Language: English.
- Single Player
- Things that might be relevant to the bug, I have heard people say this bug happens when you don’t have all your tools in your inventory on pass out or sleeping. My most recent crash happened after a skull cavern run, and had only sword, pickaxe and return receptor as far as tools on me. I cannot remember what tools I did or did not have on me with previous error messages.
- My game is not modded.
