Do patches update current gameplay files?

This may be a silly question, but I have recently fallen in love with the game on ps4 after my little sister introduced me. 1.5 will be the first patch that I have seen as a player.

I've made so much progress on my current file; I've finished the community center, I'm married and working on having my second child, my house is fully upgraded, max hearts with most NPCs, etc.

When the patch comes out next year for consoles, will I have to make a completely new file to have access to the updates and new features?

Don't worry, your save file will be updated and you'll be able to see all the new content without making a new one!

Really!? That makes me so so happy! I almost decided to rage quit until the new patch but now I'm just going to keep upgrading my sheds and growing new fruit trees
