Hi cassieososassie and Welcome to the Forums!

You most certainly do not have to do Skull Cavern to enjoy most of the rest of the game. The Cavern is useful for getting a lot of Iridium and other resources but there are other ways to get pretty much everything. Just play the game the way that you like and do the things that make you happy, whether they be giving Gifts or raising Crops or shearing Sheep or napping next to the river, ah ahem, Fishing....

I was totally Fishing, it's the Fish that are lazy not biting my ugly unbaited and tackled hook.

If at some point in the distant future you do want to try out Skull Cavern, there are a few items that make it possible to enjoy yourself there at least for a short while. Wear your Space Boots. The Galaxy Sword is highly recommended. Take a lot of gold star Cheez and eat it frequently, so keep a few happy Cows and process their Large Milks in the Cheese Press. Take a Luck + Speed Buff food like Spicy Eel, both of those Buffs help while you're in there.

But save all that for way wayyyy later and enjoy the things you like to do now. Tailor some Clothes and make fun outfits! Design a cool pattern on your Farm so it looks like a Junimo! Decorate your Farmhouse so it looks like a Pirate Den!

Stardew Valley's greatness is in its flexibility for thousands of different players each making it their own personal version of fun. Make your fun!

The skull cave in the game has an important role. Activities such as mining, completing missions, and hunting monsters are often carried out. It doesn't matter if you want to play it casual, as many other people follow a similar pattern.

Sometimes, even though we try our best, what we want is still difficult to achieve. Failure is inevitable, but it shouldn't be a reason to give up. (͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖)👌

I totally agree with what everyone has said. Because I want to play to 100% completion, it's necessary for me to go to skull cavern. My first task was to get to level 25. So I made up 30 staircases and dropped down in about 5 minutes. Quest done. There is another quest now for me to get to 100. I'll do the same thing. Eventually, I will have to go in there and kill a bunch of monsters for completion. But as mentioned above, I'll wait until I've reached the end of the volcano and have the best equipment available. Then I'll pack a lunch (i.e. a ton of food and healing potions) and get to it.

But if you don't care about completion, you never ever have to go there. I hate fighting in games too and avoid it as much as possible. I think a "chill game" should be played in a chill manner!

Welcome to Stardew Valley and these forums!

When you're first starting out, it seems daunting and terribly stressful. But after you've played many, many saves, you may want to more challenge, and Skull Cavern is great for that. There's all the prep to craft stairs and tools, food for buffs, and then it's fun to see how far you can go.

Mining is my favorite thing so I'd say be patient with yourself and don't feel pressured to try it before you're ready (and prepared).

Surviving the skull cavern is all about being prepared. That's even true in the regular mines. Don't worry about it until you have a good weapon (at least a lava katana), good healing food like gold cheese, and good buff foods for speed, luck, defense, or whatever works for you (pumpkin soup is good, as well as crab cakes, or even roots platter). Above all, be careful not to let your health get too low. Skull cavern's not as bad as it seems at first. Eventually you might enjoy the challenge.
