Mac controller immediately crashing game since 1.6.5 update

Since I updated to 1.6.5 the game crashes as soon as it opens. I've tried with both a switch and playstation controller and had the same result. I can start the game if I'm using the keyboard but the moment I connect a controller it crashes when it would normally give the gamepad popup. I've tried restarting the computer as well as uninstalling reinstalling- no difference.
