Once I have this in inventory, I can't get rid of it other than to put it in a chest or sell it at the Adventurer's Guild. I can't throw it in the garbage or click off the inventory screen to have it fall to the ground.

I was fishing at the time and got a treasure chest, but didn't have room for the trident. However I couldn't get rid of it once I picked it up other than to put it in my inventory and throw something else out to close the screen.
