Windows can't interact with my dog

I've heard that once you get your pet to "love" you, you can tell it to follow you throughout your daily routine. I got the message that my dog loved me a while ago, but still, all I can do is pet him. I've seen no option to tell my dog to follow me around, and that's what I was most excited about when getting a pet. :(
Is this a bug? Or am I missing something?
