Switch Can't exit menu

I'm new to Stardew Valley and I can't seem to exit the menu. I wake up, take the seeds, go outside, hit B to open the menu, grab the pickaxe, and then no matter what I do I can't exit the menu so I can start using the pickaxe. 'm sure the solution is very simple but I just can't find it. I'm using the Switch attached to my TV and a standard Nintendo controller. Thanks in advance

Well for starters you don't need to open your menu to grab your pickaxe. Use zl and zr and you can select things in your toolbar.

Are you using b to exit the menu?
