Can someone use the same secondary farmer in local and online co-op?

I started a farm to play with my partner and they created their character for a local co op and we have played through split screen. We don't live together and would like to play remote co-op as well. They don't have a switch and are considering buying one so we can play together without being in the same house. We are wondering if I started a remote co-op on the same farm if they would be able to use the character they have already created or if we would need to make a new farm, or if they would need to make a new character? Has anyone had the same situation?

I think they can use the same character. The host player can enter this command in the chatbox: /unlinkPlayer CharacterName

That will make it so your partner can reclaim the character when playing online.
