I didn't discover this bug myself, but it was reported on the wiki, and this is what I can tell you:
The bug has been observed in-game using a sword with supposed defense of +3, there was no change in damage taken by player from slimes until equipping the Crabshell Ring. Damage taken with or without the sword was always 3-5 until equipping the ring, when damage was always reduced to 1.
It may have something to do with the interaction of 2+ Monster.takeDamage overloads.
@kdau may be able to further elaborate on the specific code that's malfunctioning, as I believe he discovered the problem.
